Restorations - Mazda MX-5
The main feature (at least from the outside) of the Mazda MX-5 are definitely the pop-up headlights - the unrivaled feature of this model, and definitely what makes this car still special. Mazda removed the pop-up headlights as early as the model’s first upgrade in 1997, but it didn’t do so for aesthetic or performance reasons, not even because they wanted to, but because they had to. Namely, Mazda had to pass the pedestrian safety test, which they - obviously so - had failed with pop-up lights and therefore were forced to implement the usual headlights system, and thus lost what made it special - that cool factor of popup headlights. However, Mazda has decided to please MX-5 fans and has recently reintroduced the pop-up lights in a slightly modernized way.
Although the modern version has a certain amount of charm, we still have the impression that it failed to bring back that cool factor from the old model. Additionally, this new Mazda seems a bit sleepy :)
Let’s go back to the old model we restored. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is certainly not a rare vehicle. Namely, during the production of the first generation (1989 - 1997) more than 400,000 units were sold. The MX-5 was an extremely light vehicle, weighing just over a ton.
The MX-5 also won several awards, including Wheels Magazine’s Car of the Year 1989 and Sports Car International’s “Best Sports Cars of the 1990s”.
